When will Our Hearts Change? 2018 is a true story based on Purna Pariya’s childhood memories of growing up in a small Nepalese village. It relives the misfortunes suffered by Mulya Lato, a mute, and the stigma of being socially unacceptable within Nepalese society, even when he tries to help within his community. According to Nepalese culture mutism is considered a symptom for bad luck and mutes are openly shunned to avoid their bad luck being passed on. As a result, they are excluded from earning a living, attending places of worship and social interaction. Directed by Khamesh Shrestha and shot entirely on location at Purna’s home village of Khasur, on the popular Annapurna region trek. The cast includes many of the village’s own residents experiencing their first time on camera and is backed by traditional Nepalese songs sung by Prawjol Bhitrikoti. The film is in Nepalese dialect with English subtitles. According to Purna, ‘When Will Our Hearts Change?’ is a story close to his own heart, not only made in the memory of Mulya, who was ostracised from Purna’s village and eventually went missing, but as a commentary on his own ostracization suffered due his low position in an outdated caste system. Purna, who portrays Mulya in the film, uses his own experiences and empathy to present a story to highlight a social issue within Nepalese society that is also leads the viewer to consider how they treat other people within their own societies and cultures.
