An emaciated orphaned elephant calf was rescued from the wild after tourists spotted him struggling. Kenya Wildlife Service and David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust responded to reports of the wandering calf on March 18 and dispatched a rescue team to pick up the calf. Angela Sheldrick, Executive Director of DSWT, said: “The Rescue Team located the calf after a short search and it became clear that he was in desperate need of rescuing, and in fact with the infamous Tsavo lions plentiful in that area, it was a miracle that he was still alive. “Small predators - we suspect jackals- had attacked his rear end and hind legs and, due to his wounds coupled by poor condition, it was evident that we needed to respond fast.”
